Before expanding a company search, inspect a few results that test its boundaries. A familiar keyword is a useful starting point, but the product and the buyer’s task determine whether the company belongs.
Apply one brief to three public companies
Editorial research demonstration, checked 10 October 2026. This is a manual reading of public product pages, not an Afield search result or evidence that these companies want to buy anything.
Brief: identify software vendors focused on onboarding external business customers. Exclude employee-onboarding products. Put broad workflow platforms in a separate research bucket until the campaign owner decides whether they belong.
| Company and source | What the source establishes | Decision for this brief |
|---|---|---|
| Rocketlane: SaaS customer onboarding | Describes software for customer onboarding and implementation, with customer collaboration. | Keep. The stated workflow is external customer implementation. |
| BambooHR: onboarding | Describes new-hire packets, employee records and employee onboarding tasks. | Reject for this campaign. “Onboarding” refers to employees. |
| Process Street: customer onboarding | Supports customer workflows within a broader process platform; the site also lists employee onboarding. | Research bucket. It meets the external-customer workflow condition, but the brief has not settled whether general workflow products qualify. |
The unresolved decision is the campaign rule, not a claim that Process Street’s product is unknown. Approve broad platforms or exclude them explicitly before applying the rule to the rest of the list.
Make the correction visible in the next brief
| First wording | Observed problem | Revised wording |
|---|---|---|
| Find onboarding software vendors. | Includes employee onboarding and broad workflow platforms. | Find vendors selling software for onboarding external B2B customers. Exclude employee onboarding. Put general workflow platforms in a separate bucket; return the product URL and reason for each decision. |
Keep the offer and geography the same for the next search. Review whether the specific false positives disappeared and whether relevant companies remain. Removing every difficult result can make a list cleaner while losing useful prospects.
Use unresolved records to improve the rule
These additional rows are fictional boundary cases. They complement the public examples; they are not extra verified companies.
| Record | Decision | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Consultancy with a client login | Unresolved | A portal alone does not establish a separately sold software product. Inspect the product offer and customer documentation. |
| Consultancy selling a distinct subscription product | Potentially keep the product business | Record which product satisfies the brief instead of labeling the whole organization service-only. |
| Company with a sparse website | Unresolved | Insufficient public evidence is different from a demonstrated mismatch. |
For each reviewed record, save the domain, product URL, keep/reject/unresolved decision, reason and remaining question. Five varied records can reveal disagreements; they cannot estimate the accuracy of a whole market.
Download the shortlist-review worksheet (CSV). Carry the revised brief and reference decisions into the larger run. Use the exclusion brief to define boundaries and the entity check before treating related companies as separate buyers. In Afield, continue with the company-search refinement steps.
